fit as a fiddle is a national project that will support older people to remain fit and active and here in East London we are happy to be a part of it!
Age Concerns Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackney are working together to deliver fit as a fiddle. The project will train and equip older people to be mentors to other people of a similar age. The mentors will encourage physical activity and healthy eating. We call our mentors Activity Buddies.
Older people themselves have told us that…
Being an Activity Buddy involves helping introduce people to physical activities. It means encouraging and supporting people to build their confidence. Being a buddy means giving time, answering questions in a patient and caring way – in other words a buddy is being side-by-side with someone else.
Would you like to be an Activity Buddy?
As an Activity Buddy you would be matched with somebody of your own age who wants to get involved in local activities but doesn’t want to go by themselves.
Getting together weekly, you would support another person to get into a more healthy and active lifestyle and have fun together at the same time!
Activity Buddies are short term volunteers, you would be linked with the other person for around 6 months.

Would you like to have support from an Activity Buddy?
Sometimes it is hard to start a new activity on your own. If you’re aged over 50 we can link you with an Activity Buddy - this is someone of a similar age who can help get you started and encourage you on your way. People we have linked together in the past have tried a range of activities together like badminton, swimming, walking, and exercise sessions.
